How to prepare your car for sale

A car that looks cared for, comes with its paperwork in order and has no unpleasant surprises is easier to sell. Buyers decide quickly, often within the first few minutes of seeing the car. A few hours of preparation before you publish the ad can save you weeks of haggling and repeated questions.

Start with an honest look at the car

Walk around the car as if you were the buyer. Note scratches, dents, chipped glass, worn tyres, cracked plastic, warning lights and anything that does not work. Write the list down. You will use it later in the ad, and it helps you decide what is worth fixing and what is better disclosed.

Be realistic about the value too. Before you set a price, read how to value your car to sell and compare with the fair price tool. Remember that advertised prices are only what other sellers hope to get, not what cars actually sell for.

Fix small things, think twice about big ones

Small, cheap faults make a bad impression out of proportion to their cost. A blown bulb, a worn wiper, a missing hub cap or a dead interior light suggests the car was neglected, and buyers wonder what else was missed. These are usually quick to put right.

Big repairs are different. Spending a lot on a major repair rarely returns the full amount in the sale price. If something expensive is wrong, it is often better to be open about it and adjust the price. Get a quote from a workshop first so you know what the fault really costs, and use that figure when you talk to buyers.

  • Replace bulbs, wipers and a worn number plate light.
  • Top up washer fluid, and check oil and coolant levels.
  • Fix warning lights if the cause is simple; otherwise note them honestly.
  • Do not hide faults with quick fixes. A buyer who finds out later will walk away or ask for money back.

Clean it properly

A clean car is the cheapest way to raise buyer confidence. Wash the body, clean the wheels and glass, and spend real time on the inside. Vacuum seats and carpets, empty the boot, wipe the dashboard and door panels, and remove personal items and odours. Do not forget door seals, the engine bay surface and the inside of the boot.

You do not need an expensive professional detail, but a thorough clean you do yourself or pay a small amount for is worthwhile. Our guide on cleaning the car inside and out has a simple routine. Avoid strong air fresheners, which can look like you are covering something.

Gather the paperwork

Missing documents slow down or kill a sale. Put everything in one folder before the first viewing:

  • The registration documents and anything that proves you are the owner.
  • The service book and invoices for repairs and parts.
  • Inspection or roadworthiness papers, if your country uses them.
  • Manuals, spare keys, the code card for the radio or security system, and locking wheel nut key.
  • Any warranty papers that can still be passed on.

Rules for ownership transfer differ by country, so check with the competent authority what is needed. Our guide to selling your car step by step covers the general order of events. A complete service history is one of the strongest selling points you can have, so if you kept records in a logbook such as My Garage, print or share them.

Check the basics buyers will test

Before a viewing, make sure the car starts easily, the tyres are inflated to the right pressure, the lights and indicators work, and the air conditioning, windows and central locking respond. Remove anything that makes a test drive awkward, such as a full boot or loose items on the seats. Fuel it with enough to allow a short drive.

Consider a pre-sale inspection

If the car is older or you want to inspire extra trust, a check at an independent workshop can be useful. A written report of what was checked gives buyers something to rely on, and it lets you deal with known problems on your terms. It is optional, and the cost should make sense next to the value of the car.

Decide your limits in advance

Before you publish, decide the price you want, the lowest price you would accept, when you are available, and where you will show the car. Choose a safe, public place with good light. Knowing your limits makes negotiation calmer. For what to expect, read dealing with buyers and tyre kickers.

What to remember

  • Look at the car as a buyer would and write down its faults.
  • Fix cheap problems, be open about expensive ones.
  • Clean thoroughly inside and out.
  • Put all documents, keys and service records in one place.
  • Set your price and your lowest price before the first call.
